Loteni - Southern Drakensberg

Loteni is wild and lonely a ravine hideaway in the shadow of the high peaks. Its name means in the ashes, from the burnt appearance of the shale found in this river valley in the magnificent southern Drakensberg.

The Loteni reserve has a hutted camp of 12 self-contained bungalows, each with its own refrigerator, gas stove, bathroom and toilet, as well as bedding , crockery and cutlery and two self-contained cottages. Visitors bring their own food and do their own cooking [the nearest shop is at Loteni, some 14 km away). The campground, lying 2 km from the hutted camp, has 12 sites with an ablution block with hot and cold water. Simes Rustic Cottage, equipped with gas, lies on the shore of a small, trout-stocked dam, which is reserved for use by the occupants of the cottage. Visitors must bring their own food and linen.

Loteni lies 72 km west of the village of Nottingham Road, on the road to Himeville (turn right at the Loteni Store and youll reach the entrance to the reserve after ten kilometres). The gates are open between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. from 1 October to 31 March, and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. between 1 April and 30 September. Fishing licenses and permits may be obtained from the camp manager. Picnickers are Welcome, but should note that fires are prohibited.
